Counting calories

Counting calories: a simple guide for beginners

Counting calories is the most effective way to get a feel for portion sizes, energy balance and your own eating habits. Once you know what actually ends up on your plate, you can lose, maintain or build weight on purpose — without a crash diet.

What does counting calories mean?

All food provides energy, measured in kilocalories (kcal). Your body burns a certain amount every day, known as total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Eat more than you burn and you gain weight; eat less and you lose it. Simple in theory, not always easy in everyday life.

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the share your body uses at rest. On top of that come everyday activity and exercise. Set your personal targets in the settings — KuGT uses them directly for your daily overview.

How to count accurately

  • Weigh solid food raw and trimmed (peel, bones removed) for the most accurate value.
  • Count drinks too — they often carry more calories than people expect.
  • Oils, sauces, dressings and nuts add up quickly; keep a separate eye on them.
  • Estimate portions honestly — a small bowl of nuts can be 300 kcal.
  • Leave room for unplanned snacks, so one slip does not derail the day.

How KuGT makes counting easier

The tedious part of counting calories is looking up food. KuGT takes most of that off your hands:

Food search

Type in a name and pull the nutrition values straight from the Open Food Facts database.

Barcode lookup

Log packaged products by barcode number — including the data from Open Food Facts.

Goals & history

Carry your calorie and protein targets over from the calculator and follow your progress in 7-day trends.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Logging only the main meal and forgetting the snacks.
  • Ignoring drinks, especially juice, milky coffee and alcohol.
  • Trying to be perfect every day — one bad day is no reason to quit.
  • Eating too little just because the app shows a number: the target has to stay realistic.

In short

Counting calories works when you stay consistent without being pedantic. The right tools save you time and keep you going. KuGT makes tracking as simple as it can be — locally on your iPhone, without an account and without distractions.
